Kimre, Inc. Fiber Bed Filters are designed to provide end users with many years of optimal performance and minimal operational or maintenance requirements. We supply complete Fiber Bed Filter Systems for flow rates from 10 CFM to 250,000 CFM (15 Cubic Meters/Hr to 425,000 Cubic Meters/Hr). Smaller single-filter systems can be supplied with a vessel or skid-mounted fan, allowing for quick setup and connection for immediate operation. For intermediate flow ranges, we offer skid-mounted systems or separate vessels, fans, pre-filters, and exhaust stacks, tailored to site conditions. Larger systems require field assembly, which will be overseen by Kimre project engineering to ensure a successful installation. Fiber Bed Filters are used to trap, collect, and remove liquids and soluble particulate matter suspended in a gas stream. They are also capable of collecting insoluble solids. Particle Collection Principles Kimre Fiber Bed Filters operate based on three primary particle collection mechanisms: Impaction: Large particles (>3 microns) travel within the fluid stream. While the fluid will move around obstacles, the inertia of larger particles causes them to continue along their original path, impacting the filter fibers where they are collected. Interception: Medium-sized particles (>1 micron) are captured when their trajectory brings them into direct contact with filter fibers. Brownian Diffusion: Very small particles ( 3 µm): inertia-driven collision Interception (>1 µm): contact with fiber path Brownian Diffusion (

Mist elimination or “demisting” is the mechanical separation or removal of liquid droplets and mists from vapor streams. Failure to capture these mists effectively can lead to higher contaminant emissions, production losses, corrosion of downstream equipment, and increased maintenance. The most common mist elimination technologies are chevron separators (also referred to as vane-type mist eliminator or vane mist eliminator) and knitted wire-mesh mist eliminators. Chevrons or vane mist eliminators are plate-type eliminators that offer high liquid handling capabilities but have limited collection efficiency for fine mist droplets below 20 microns (µm). Knitted mesh pad mist eliminators are made from wires or fibers formed into a randomly oriented mesh-pad structure. These can capture droplets down to 3–5 microns but often have limited liquid-handling capacity and are prone to fouling from insoluble contaminants. Mesh Pad Mist Eliminators B-GON® Mist Eliminator Pads were developed using Kimre’s unique structured media to address the deficiencies inherent in existing technologies. This three-dimensional, ladder-like media is constructed from interlocking thermoplastic monofilament wires. The design orients nearly all fibers perpendicular to the gas flow, maximizing contact with entrained droplets. This arrangement alters the vapor flow through the structure, enabling maximum mist removal through impaction, interception, and centrifugal action. B-GON® mist eliminator mesh pads deliver the highest performance of any mesh-type mist eliminator, with efficiencies exceeding 99% for droplets as small as 1 micron. The high percentage of perpendicular fibers reduces pressure loss while maintaining efficiency equal to or greater than traditional knitted mesh pads. Kimre produces B-GON® Mesh...

Scrubbers and tower packing are widely used in industries such as chemical processing, petrochemicals, and power generation for gas absorption, pollution control, and heat transfer. These solutions help optimize performance in air purification, wastewater treatment, and industrial emissions control processes. Tower packing is typically used to provide an improved environment for contact between two phases and facilitate mass transfer. In unit operations or gas cleaning applications, mass transfer refers to the net movement of a chemical from one phase to another. This involves the transfer of a gaseous component into a liquid component, or vice versa. Mass transfer is performed in processes such as absorption, scrubbing, stripping and distillation. The most common form of tower packing is referred to as “Dumped” or “Random” packing. These packings consist of a mass of inert solid shapes that are “dumped” in a cylindrical column. Tower packing provides greater surface area in a wet packed tower scrubber for gas and liquid to make contact. Structured tower packing is another type of packed tower scrubber which operates in the same manner. Packed Tower Scrubber Kimre’s KON-TANE® Packed Tower Scrubber and Tower Packing is a structured, interlaced, monofilament material. It is designed to facilitate the breakup of the liquid phase, creating a maximum surface area for mass transfer in the vapor phase. KON-TANE® tower packing produces low pressure drop, prevents liquid holdup and drastically reduces energy use. Due to its inherent rigidity and strength, KON-TANE® can be installed in layered pads that are numerous feet/meters deep....

These highly efficient mist eliminator filters are designed to meet even the most challenging mist elimination requirements. Our Fiber Bed Candle Filters can be tailored for new systems to align with your specific efficiency, pressure drop, and footprint needs, delivering removal efficiencies greater than 99. 9% for sub-micron particles. Whether you require standardized configurations or custom designs, we can accommodate your unique installation. Renowned Candle Filter Manufacturer Kimre™ Fiber Bed Candle Filters effectively trap, collect, and remove liquids and soluble particulate matter suspended in a gas stream. These cylindrical elements feature a "bed" composed of fine fibers of media, available in various grades and densities, packed between two cylindrical screens. As mist-laden gas passes through the filter wall, cleaned gas exits from the opposite side. Depending on the flow direction, gas can move from the inside to the outside (forward flow or sitting filter) or from the outside to the inside (reverse flow or hanging filter). As particles attempt to pass through the candle filter, they are captured by the fibers. Larger particles are collected through inertial methods, while the high efficiency of the fiber bed filter is enhanced by Brownian motion, where gas molecules collide with sub-micron particles. This collection mechanism is known as Brownian diffusion. Liquid particles or dissolved solids coalesce into drops on the filter's fiber surface and drain by gravity. Virtually any existing fiber bed mist eliminator filter from any manufacturer can...

In process industries, filtration is not a secondary concern—it’s a fundamental element of system design that directly affects product purity, process stability, and regulatory compliance. Whether removing fine solids, aerosols, or entrained liquids, selecting the right filtration technology helps ensure operational consistency and reduces downtime across chemical, petrochemical, and other demanding industrial sectors. Among the most widely used industrial filtration technologies are candle filters. These systems have a proven record of performance in applications ranging from chemical manufacturing and catalyst recovery to gas scrubbing and air pollution control. However, their operating principles, maintenance requirements, and life-cycle costs differ significantly. Understanding these distinctions allows engineers to specify the most efficient and reliable system for their process needs. Candle Filters: Engineering and Operation A candle filter is composed of multiple vertical elements housed within a pressure vessel. Each element—commonly called a “candle”—consists of a porous support core covered with a filter medium. As fluid passes through, solids accumulate on the surface of the medium, forming a cake that enhances separation efficiency. When differential pressure reaches a preset limit, an automated backwash or gas blowback cycle dislodges the collected solids, allowing for continuous or semi-continuous operation with minimal manual handling. Leading candle filter manufacturers, including Kimre™ Clean Air Technology, design these systems for long service life and high mechanical integrity. Precision-engineered materials such as sintered metals, synthetic fibers, or ceramic media are selected based on process chemistry, temperature, and particle size distribution. Applications of Candle Filters in Industrial Operations Candle filtration systems are...

A key advantage of candle filters lies in their ability to eliminate both entrained solids and fine liquid mists. For mist applications, the filter media acts as a coalescing bed, where submicron droplets impinge on the fibrous surface, merge into larger droplets, and are drained away by gravity or mechanical means. In high-efficiency applications, candle filters are frequently used alongside or in sequence with fiber bed mist eliminators. While fiber bed units target ultrafine mists (often down to submicron levels), candle filters serve to protect downstream systems and capture residual solids or larger droplets. This combined approach ensures high separation efficiency across a broad particle size distribution. Multi-Bed Candle Filter Configurations: Design and Advantages A multi-bed candle filter system consists of multiple filtration stages arranged in vertical tiers or staggered beds within a single housing vessel. Each stage is designed for a specific function—pre-filtration, coalescence, or fine particulate removal—resulting in enhanced overall system performance. Key benefits include: Reduced pressure drop, leading to lower energy consumption Distributed contaminant loading, extending filter element life Higher throughput capacity, ideal for high-flow applications Improved operational stability, even under variable process conditions This type of configuration is especially effective in systems processing high particulate or mist concentrations where conventional single-stage filters would suffer from premature fouling or excessive backpressure. Applications Across Industrial Sectors Engineered candle filters, particularly those designed in multi-bed configurations, are deployed across a range of industrial sectors: Chemical processing plants, for catalyst recovery and process fluid purification Oil refineries, where mist and...

- Categories: Blog
Drift loss—defined as the unintended entrainment of liquid-phase water droplets into the exhaust air stream of evaporative cooling systems—constitutes a significant operational inefficiency and environmental liability in industrial cooling tower applications. In the absence of an effective cooling tower drift eliminator, these droplets, which frequently contain high concentrations of treatment chemicals, are discharged into the atmosphere, leading to loss of process water, excessive chemical consumption, material degradation, and regulatory noncompliance. Drift droplets originate primarily from the interaction of turbulent airflows with the heat exchange media and water distribution infrastructure. This phenomenon becomes particularly pronounced at elevated air velocities and in systems exhibiting suboptimal internal flow dynamics. The integration of a correctly specified and well-engineered cooling tower mist eliminator is therefore essential to limit drift loss and preserve the functional efficiency of the evaporative heat rejection process. Operational and Environmental Implications of Drift Loss Excessive Chemical Consumption and Cycle Instability When chemically conditioned water is lost via drift, both the water volume and its additive constituents—such as biocides, scale inhibitors, and corrosion inhibitors—must be replenished. This leads to increased operational expenditures and necessitates frequent recalibration of the system’s cycles of concentration. Persistent drift loss undermines chemical control programs and introduces variability in water quality management. Material Degradation and Surface Corrosion Drift droplets, especially those carrying high total dissolved solids (TDS) and corrosive ions, deposit on adjacent structural components, instrumentation, and process equipment. Over time, this leads to localized corrosion, fouling, and loss of mechanical integrity. The absence of an effective high-efficiency...

An Engineering Perspective on Contamination Control in Industrial Environments In high-demand industrial operations—particularly those involving metalworking, thermoplastics processing, or petrochemical synthesis—the generation of airborne oil mist, fine aerosols, and vapor-phase lubricants is an inevitable consequence of elevated temperatures, high-speed rotation, and turbulent fluid contact. Without a robust mitigation strategy, these submicron particles and oil vapors accumulate on sensitive components, catalyzing premature mechanical degradation, electronic failures, and process variability. A properly engineered oil mist collector, designed to operate either at the point source or within a centralized ventilation system, plays a critical role in controlling these emissions. By efficiently capturing oil mist, vaporized lubricants, and condensable hydrocarbon species, these systems significantly reduce contamination, extend the operational lifespan of assets, and enhance plant safety. The Mechanism Behind Machinery Degradation Oil mist forms when lubricants or process fluids atomize due to shear forces, flashing, or high-temperature vaporization. These airborne contaminants, once liberated, become entrained in ventilation currents and disperse across equipment surfaces and control systems. The implications are multi-faceted: Electronic Controls: Deposition on PCB substrates or optical sensors can lead to signal interference, short-circuiting, or system drift. Rotating Equipment: Bearings, shaft seals, and linear guides accumulate dust-bound oil mist, accelerating wear via tribological abrasion. Thermal Management Systems: Fouling of heat exchangers or coolant filtration elements restricts flow rates and degrades thermal conductivity, increasing the risk of overheating. For continuous or high-precision operations, such contamination leads to increased unplanned downtime, unscheduled maintenance, and non-compliance with ISO clean manufacturing standards. In wet scrubber systems, mist eliminators—also referred to as moisture eliminators or mist eliminator filters—are essential components for achieving efficient gas-liquid separation. Their performance is tightly coupled with system-wide outcomes such as emission control, operational uptime, and protection of downstream assets. The design of a mist eliminator fundamentally governs its efficiency in capturing entrained droplets, minimizing pressure drop, and resisting fouling under varying process conditions. Kimre’s engineering-driven approach to mist elimination focuses on aligning material science, structural configuration, and system dynamics to ensure optimal performance under real-world industrial conditions. Critical Engineering Parameters in Mist Eliminator Design 1. Material Selection: Chemical Resistance and Thermal Integrity The selection of construction materials for a mist eliminator filter must reflect both the chemical environment and mechanical operating parameters such as temperature, pressure, and flow regime. Typical Materials Used: Stainless Steel Alloys (e. g. , 316L): High mechanical integrity and corrosion resistance; ideal for high-temperature applications involving oxidizing agents. Engineered Thermoplastics (e. g. , PTFE, PVDF, Polypropylene): Preferred in acidic or halogenated gas environments with moderate thermal loads. Fiberglass-Reinforced Plastics (FRP): Lightweight and structurally robust; suitable for scrubbers in fertilizer, battery, or chlor-alkali plants. Material compatibility must also account for the system’s cleaning procedures (e. g. , chemical cleaning, steam injection). Suboptimal material selection may lead to polymer embrittlement, corrosion fatigue, or accelerated fouling—ultimately compromising mist eliminator performance and service life. 2. Mesh and Fiber Bed Configuration: Droplet Removal and Pressure Drop Balance Mesh-type moisture eliminators and fiber bed assemblies dominate when high-efficiency droplet removal...

Cooling towers are fundamental in regulating thermal loads across various industrial applications, preventing the overheating of machinery and ensuring the maintenance of safe operational conditions. However, like any complex system, cooling towers must be rigorously maintained to mitigate both operational inefficiencies and environmental impacts. A critical component in the effective functioning of these systems is the drift eliminator, a device integral to the efficiency and sustainability of cooling tower operations. The Role of the Cooling Tower Drift Eliminator Cooling towers utilizing water for heat dissipation inherently experience water loss due to evaporation. However, an additional form of water loss, known as drift, occurs when larger water droplets are carried away by the air stream, contributing to inefficiencies. The drift eliminator is specifically engineered to mitigate this issue. Located at the air outlet, the drift eliminator directs air and vapor through a series of precisely designed curved pathways. These deflections slow down larger water droplets, facilitating their separation from the airflow, thereby allowing them to fall back into the basin for recirculation. This mechanism serves to prevent: Excessive water consumption Release of chemical pollutants into the atmosphere Diminished cooling efficiency Non-compliance with environmental regulations The Significance of High-Efficiency Drift Eliminators In addition to their role in water conservation, the use of high-efficiency drift eliminators is paramount in systems where water is chemically treated to prevent issues such as corrosion, bacterial proliferation, or scaling. The inadvertent release of chemically treated water droplets can exacerbate airborne contamination and present health hazards to personnel....

Mist Eliminators are essential components of wet scrubbers, making them an important factor to consider when selecting a wet scrubber for an industrial application. Mist eliminators, including those using mesh pads, are typically used to remove droplets of water or other liquids from a gas stream, thus improving the efficiency of a wet scrubber. By effectively separating liquid from gas, mist eliminators help reduce emissions, protect downstream equipment, and maintain regulatory compliance. What Do Mist Eliminators Do? The role of mist eliminators in wet scrubbers is to control the particle size and mass flow of the scrubbed gas stream. This is done by trapping and removing droplets of water and other liquids that would otherwise be entrained in the gas stream. By removing these particles, mist eliminators help improve the efficiency and effectiveness of a wet scrubber. Mist eliminators in wet scrubbers: Capture fine droplets of water, acid, or chemicals from exhaust streams Prevent liquid carryover into downstream equipment Reduce emissions for air pollution control compliance Improve scrubber efficiency and overall plant performance. Without a properly designed mist eliminator, wet scrubbers can lose efficiency, leading to higher emissions and increased maintenance. Common Types of Mist Eliminators Common types of mist eliminators used in wet scrubbers include mesh, wire mesh mist eliminators, vane mist eliminators, and fiber bed mist eliminators. Mist eliminator filters are vital in the gas scrubbing process because they remove fine droplets from the air before it is sent into the environment. Since the introduction of stricter environmental laws to significantly limit the expulsion of polluting gasses from gas-washing plants, mist eliminators have become more vital than ever. Mist eliminators can separate droplets as fine as 10 micrometers or less, and it does so with a low pressure drop. Before designing a mist eliminator filter, it helps to gain an understanding of how droplets are formed and how they flow in a gas. Several different factors need to be considered before choosing the best method to eliminate droplets from gas. Some of the mist eliminator filter criteria include: Size of the droplets Pressure drop Flooding potential How To Select The Right Mist Eliminator Liquid droplets are created in different sizes depending on how they were formed. There are three major categories of dropletsbased on their size: fogs, mists, and sprays. When the droplets created are of a size less than 3 microns, they are categorized as fog. Sizes of droplets between 3 microns and greater are termed a mist. Lastly, those droplets that are larger than 20 microns are called a spray. The mist eliminator is chosen depending on the size of the droplets. For instance, particles termed as mist would be best suited to a wire knitted mesh demister. On the other hand, for particles that are 20 microns or larger, vane-type mist eliminators are most...

When it comes to maintaining clean and efficient operations in industrial settings, demister pads play a crucial role in separating liquid droplets from gas streams. This innovative technology, also known as mist eliminators or mist pads, ensures optimal performance by effectively capturing and removing mist and aerosols. Let's delve into the world of demister pads, explore what they are, how they function in vessels, and their significance in enhancing industrial processes. What Is A Demister Pad? A demister pad is a specialized filtration device designed to remove liquid droplets or mist entrained in gas streams. It consists of a tightly woven mesh, typically made of materials such as stainless steel, Monel, or PTFE. The mesh structure of the demister pad provides a large surface area for the gas and liquid mixture to interact, enabling the separation process. How Does Demister Pads Work in Vessels? Demister pads find extensive use in various types of vessels, such as distillation columns, evaporators, scrubbers, and separators. They are installed within the vessel to capture and remove mist, preventing carryover and ensuring the quality of the gas stream. The separation process within the demister pad involves several mechanisms: Inertial Impaction: As the gas stream flows through the demister pad, droplets with high inertia collide with the wire surfaces of the mesh. This causes the droplets to coalesce and drain down the pad. Diffusion: Smaller droplets present in the gas stream move in a zigzag motion due to diffusion. This motion allows the droplets to come...

Packed Tower Scrubbers are vital pollution control devices that are primarily used to absorb gases from a wide variety of processes before the gas stream is released into the environment. Many industrial and municipal businesses are regulated using operating permits issued by a regulating body and require certain criteria are met. However, packed tower scrubbers can also be engineered to recover product and increase plant recovery in certain applications. The application of packed tower scrubbers is common in industry because this style of scrubber is highly versatile and can be engineered to address a wide range of pollutants. Packed Tower Scrubbers use a form of “wet scrubbing” in which a chemical solution, often referred to as liquor, is distributed throughout the tower to absorb specific gas or gases from the gaseous phase into the liquid phase. As the liquor is sprayed inside the tower using spray bars, the liquor falls onto a material called tower packing. The packing provides the interface to allow gas/liquid contact. To improve the efficiency of pollutant removal, different types of packing can be used inside of the tower to increase the contact area in which the liquor meets the gas. The contact area allows for both heat and mass transfer to be performed at a greater efficiency than if only sprays were used. Scrubber packing can vary in the material of construction, pressure drop, size, and shape depending on the process application and design requirements of the scrubber. The term “Packed Tower Scrubber” usually is...

Fine oil mist is an aerosol mixture of oil droplets within the air that can look like smoke. These droplets are formed through processes such as, metalworking fluids— cooling fluids and lubricants— meeting fast rotating tools and objects. Such processes can include milling and drilling. The oil mist produced is so small that it gets dispersed into the air where it can cause many issues and malfunctions. The best way to avoid issues and capture oil mist is by using custom designed fiber bed candle filters. Candle Filters are cylindrical filters composed of layered fiber bed media wrapped around an inner cage and typically surrounded by an outer cage. Filters can be anywhere from 1 ft to 20 feet in length. Each filter can be made to fit the requirements of the system. Dependent on the industrial process oil aerosol mist vary in size and distribution between . 1μm to 10μm. As a result, each layer of media is composed of different densities that allow for efficient oil mist collection of any size. The cages that encompass the filter media are also made to fit the system. Cages can be constructed out of polymers, corrosion resistant alloys and carbon steel. The result is a filter that can be customized to best support your system properly. What fiber bed mist eliminators (also known as fiber bed filters or candle filters) do is collect and capture oil mist in submicron form. This process of collecting and capturing oil mist can reduce many...

Scrubbers are groups of different devices that come together to control air contamination through many mediums. A large component of scrubbers are the filters used to remove gases and particulates of different sizes in order to purify industrial exhaust streams. To keep the scrubber working properly, mist eliminator filters are used because they collect and remove dangerous mist that would contaminate the air. Mist eliminators come in different diameters made to fit the needs of the scrubber/ system. The filter is composed of layers of filters piled on top of one another. The layers are made up of different materials, such as thermoplastic that can withstand high heat while collecting harmful particulates and acidic mists. Each layer can also be comprised of different diameter sizes based on the particle size that needs to be captured. Choosing the right diameter filter for your Scrubber will be the difference between an efficient scrubber and one that releases contaminants. For example, if the diameter of the filter is too large, unwanted particulates can escape and contaminate the air. If the diameter is too small, clogs can form in the system impacting flow. In either case, the result is an inefficient filter that will negatively impact the system as a whole. When considering how to maintain your system, the type of mist eliminator is also important. Since each system is designed to handle different types of contaminants, the mist eliminator used should match the requirements of the system. For example, when running a system...

Oil mist will be produced anytime there is rotating machinery in the metal working industry. Oil mist, which is sometimes called organic vapor is formed from a combination of fluids that are used to cool and lubricate rotating machinery. Lubricating oil creates a layer between the moving parts of machinery in attempts to ensure optimal machine function. During the process of cutting, polishing and grinding of metals along with the combined use of cooling and lubricating fluids, fine oil mist and smoke is formed and released into the air. One way to capture the oil mist is to utilize an oil mist eliminator. Oil mist eliminators such as Fiberbed Filters can help with oil smoke, which is formed when oil droplets are extremely small. Oil smoke is usually produced when machinery is operating at high speed and pressure. When oil contacts the hot machine surface, it vaporizes and condenses then releases sub-micron particles. These tiny droplets are too small to see with the naked eye, however, they are floating in the air until they settle. The residue can be seen on nearby walls, equipment, and machinery. If not captured and filtered, these particles could cause a plethora of problems for companies and operators. In a closed environment such as a factory or a machine shop, mist can linger in the atmosphere and pose a serious health risk to employees. Once released into the atmosphere, the particles leave a negative impact on the environment. There are millions of people who work...

In industries such as chemical processing, oil & gas, power generation, and sulfuric acid production, effective mist elimination is critical. Tiny liquid droplets carried in gas streams not only reduce process efficiency but also cause corrosion, equipment fouling, product loss, and regulatory compliance issues. Two of the most widely used solutions are mesh pad mist eliminators and vane (chevron) mist eliminators. Each comes with unique strengths, limitations, and ideal use cases. This guide provides a deep dive into how they work, where they excel, and how to select the right solution for your application—with insights into Kimre’s B-GON® Mesh Pad technology for next-generation performance. Understanding Mist Formation and the Role of Eliminators Mist is formed when liquid is entrained in gas flow. This can happen in scrubbers, distillation towers, absorbers, or cooling systems. Droplets can range from submicron sizes (100 µm). Why removal matters: Process efficiency - Mist carries away valuable reactants or products. Environmental compliance - Many industries must meet strict particulate and acid mist emission limits. Equipment protection – Droplets cause erosion, corrosion, and scaling in downstream equipment. Worker safety – Aerosols can contain hazardous chemicals or acids. Mist eliminators separate droplets from gas streams, usually by: Inertial impaction (large droplets >10 µm). Interception (medium droplets ~3–10 µm). Brownian diffusion (fine droplets 20 µm). Good for high gas velocities and large mist loads. Lower pressure drop compared to traditional random mesh. Durability: Robust against fouling and mechanical stress. Limitations Poor efficiency for droplets 20 µm); limited fine mist...

“Made in the USA” is a wonderful slogan to represent the foundation of a solid manufacturing country. However, while manufacturing is underway, we must consider the effects on the employees and the environment. The process of milling, turning, grinding, and drilling will generate oil mist. If not contained, oil mist will take a toll on your employees and the environment. Luckily, there are effective and affordable solutions to the “oil mist” problem. To protect your employees and equipment, invest in a company that specializes in designing and engineering mist elimination filters. In the metalworking industry, metalworking fluids (MWF) are used to cool and lubricate the machining activity. The metalworking fluids ensure reduced friction between the tool and the workpiece. In addition, they prolong the life of the tools and protect the surfaces and interiors of the machinery from corrosion. However, when droplets of these metalworking fluids are airborne, smoke, smog, and oil mist are produced. Anything smaller than 1μ is considered oil smoke. If proper mist elimination filters are not utilized, oil mist particles remain airborne and spread in the workplace. A simple solution would be to implement proper filtration. Fiber bed filters are used to capture oil mist in the industry. As if oil mist were not terrible enough on its own, many times it is combined with other toxins, such as minerals and synthetic oils, biocides, and inhibitors. Often, bacteria and contaminants also find their way into the mist. Health effects vary based on the type of MWF,...

As global awareness of air pollution and its health impacts continues to rise, industries are under greater pressure to reduce emissions and comply with environmental regulations such as the U. S. Clean Air Act and similar standards worldwide. One of the most effective technologies for achieving this is the industrial scrubber. Scrubber systems are widely used in power plants, chemical facilities, waste incinerators, and manufacturing plants to capture harmful gases, particulates, and vapors before they are released into the atmosphere. By doing so, companies not only protect public health and the environment but also avoid costly fines, shutdowns, and reputational damage. This guide explains what scrubbers are, how they work, the different types available, their key components, and why Kimre’s engineered mist eliminators and packing materials are critical for achieving peak scrubber performance. What Is an Industrial Scrubber? An industrial scrubber is an air pollution control system designed to remove pollutants from exhaust gas streams before they are discharged into the atmosphere. Depending on the process and pollutants involved, scrubbers can target: Particulate matter (dust, ash, smoke, fine solids) Acid gases (SO₂, HCl, HF) Ammonia and chlorine compounds Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) Odors and aerosols Unlike single-function systems, scrubbers are versatile — they can perform gas absorption, cooling, particulate collection, and neutralization simultaneously. Types of Industrial Scrubbers 1. Wet Scrubbers Wet scrubbers are the most widely used scrubbers due to their high efficiency and ability to handle both particulates and gases in a single system. In a world of online information, you will find many options when searching for mist elimination solutions. While many companies can sell you a mist eliminator, it is a wise choice to find a company that will design the right mist eliminator for your process. Below we will talk about the basics of mist eliminators. In the manufacturing of fertilizers, chemicals, and other processes, liquid will encounter flowing gas, as a result, the entrainment of liquid droplets will generate a mist. Mist is corrosive and can result in process inefficiencies and damage your equipment. A properly designed and installed mist eliminator will collect and remove droplets from the gas stream. Removal happens when droplets within the flowing gas strike the mist eliminator and are then captured. The material coalesces on the surface of the demister pad, causing larger droplets to form. The droplets will join and flow by gravity into the drainage area below where they are recovered or removed. One major concern in mist elimination is plugging. This occurs when a substance builds upon the surface of the mist eliminator causing a blockage and then pressure drop. It is common for process and gas stream problems to result from plugging of the demister pad. Plugging can result in product loss, excessive energy use, corrosion, reduction of equipment life, plant run times being affected, and not meeting output requirements. Structured media mist eliminators are less prone to plugging than conventional knitted mesh. When choosing a mist eliminator, it is important...

Mist is not just something in the air on a rainy day. Mist, which is a danger to your health is formed in chemical and other manufacturing processes. When it comes to health and safety, imagine mist as the suspension of chemicals and combustible liquids in lingering the air. It will settle in wherever it lands, corrode machinery and cars, and possibly cause irreversible health concerns. Responsible companies will invest heavily in capital equipment and internals to abate harmful mist and remove mist from the gaseous phase. Typically, this investment will come in the form of mist eliminations. When crossing this path, it is wise to choose a company that specializes in mist elimination. The need to separate mist droplets from the gas stream in industrial chemical processes is one of the most common occurrences in unit operation. This is achieved by using mist eliminators or demisters. A mist eliminator, also known as a demister, should meet the needs of the customer both technically and commercially, therefore you need to know what you as the client want to achieve. A properly designed and installed mist eliminator can reduce carry over, recover valuable product, increase capacity, and substantially minimize downtime. Mist eliminators are designed to address these issues and assist with production, by improving emissions and product loss which will protect downstream equipment. Mist eliminators are commonly found either in vertical towers or in stages in a horizontal scrubber or in cooling towers. They can be engineered for an existing or...

Indirect cooling of gas streams is often preferable because it eliminates the possibility of contamination of the stream being cooled. Other times, the versatility of a direct cooler to provide gas cleaning in addition to cooling can provide process benefits, saving time and money. Kimre Kon-Tane® Scrubber and Tower Packing and Kimre B-GON® Mist Eliminators are perfectly suited to provide effective cooling and cleaning in a direct contact cooler. Process area of refinery industrial factory in day time Case Study A specialty chemicals manufacturer used a recycled nitrogen stream that was cooled from 60 °C to 20 °C. They had been using an indirect cooler for a number of years, but 1000 mg/cubic meter of insoluble polymer in the 70,000-cubic-meter per hour nitrogen stream clogged the heat exchanger and required extensive annual maintenance to clean the unit. The chemical company considered other options and decided on a direct cooled system. The system consisted of an evaporative cooling section, a two-stage sensible cooling system using Kimre Kon-Tane® Scrubber and Tower Packing and a Kimre B-GON® Mist Eliminator. The evaporative cooling section sprayed 24,000 kg/hr of water into the gas stream, evaporating 435 kg/hr to reduce the gas temperature from 60 °C to 40 °C. This also reduced a small amount of the particulate. In the sensible cooling section, two stages of Kimre Kon-Tane® Scrubber and Tower structured monofilament packing were sprayed with 10 °C chilled water to achieve the required 20 °C outlet temperature, while removing over 90% of the entrained...

When a company chooses to sign a contract for a new or a retrofitted scrubber system, a project manager or team of project managers will be appointed. The importance of carrying out this practice should be applied to a project of any size. When retrofitting or supplying internals such as mist eliminators or fiber bed filters, cages, piping, gaskets, nozzles, etc, it is critical understand the benefits that a project manager can provide throughout the life of the project. Project Managers, also known as PM’s are dedicated key points of contact, that will oversee the project and navigate all challenges to ensure that the needed outcome is achieved. It goes without saying that good communication is the fundamental base to success in any situation. If you have ever heard the phrase “too many cooks in the kitchen” and how detrimental this can be, the same rings true for a kitchen without an appointed cook. Essentially the “cook” is the project manager - and it is detrimental to the project if you do not have a good project manager. It is well known in the industry that most engineers are not project managers and have never had any formal training. Therefore, it is imperative to choose an engineering company with skilled project managers. It is the responsibility of the client to provide clear product and process requirements. Fiber bed mist eliminators capture, collect, and remove liquid particle mists, sub-micron particles and harmful aerosols that cause pollution in the atmosphere. This pollution can take form as opacity, smoke, and blue haze. The pollution that is caused by mist is a product of operations of chemical and industrial processes such as, asphalt processing, acid mist control, Lube oil vents & reservoirs, metalworking (oil mist), precious metal recovery and many other applications. The definition of mist is fine liquid droplets from submicron size to about 10 μm. Fiber bed filters are used to remove the mist. Also known as candle filters, they assist with lowering atmospheric emissions. Fiber bed mist eliminators separate mist from a gas stream in the recovery process, which will improve emissions, protect downstream equipment, and maintain purity. These mist eliminators are highly adaptable and are custom designed for specific applications. Candle filters are used to trap, collect and remove liquids and soluble particulate matter suspended in a gas stream. Liquid then drains from the filters and leaves the system through a drain located in the sump. The clean air will then exit to the atmosphere. They are typically cylindrical elements where the “bed” is composed of fine fibers of media consisting of various grades and densities. The media is packed between two cylindrical screens. Various sheets of fiber bed media are supported by outer cages, inner cages and flanges constructed of carbon steel to corrosion resistant alloys and polymer materials. Sometimes the design will include a...

Tower internals are a key player in the success of the overall operation. Tower packing is a mass of inert, solid shapes that are used for various applications in distillation, absorption columns, chemical reactors and scrubber systems. The packing allows for a greater surface area with a low bulk density for gas and liquid to make contact, which can also allow for contact in different phases. Tower packing is sometimes referred to as tower internals or structured packing, random packing or trays. How does it work? The main function of a scrubber column is to remove pollutants, heat, and particulates from processing. Tower packing that is located within the column provides a surface for capturing moisture and particulates that collect and then fall to a collection point at the bottom of the tower. At the same time, the hot gases rise to an exit. Tower packing is suitable for a variety of applications and widely used in many fields, however, it is best to consult a reputable engineering and manufacturing company to evaluate and design the proper packing. Tower packing types include different materials of construction, ranging from metals to plastics, glass and ceramics. Metals can include carbon steel, stainless steel, copper and titanium. Some examples of plastics are polypropylene, PTFE and PVC. Under certain conditions or in specific applications, each provides a particular benefit that may make one tower packing type more desirable than another. Structured Packing Structured packing is specifically designed and arranged and neatly piled in the...

Profit or Pollution? We live in a world that would baffle even our most recent ancestors. Currently we are in an era where manufactures of goods can produce and ship items in the same week. Consumerism is at an all-time high. Demand for same day delivery is on the rise. Companies all over the world are over polluting to meet the goals of the modern-day consumer demands. We could dissect any product, but here we will choose the manufacturing of paper. Paper, a simple product that exists with any mail order delivery. If you look at the companies that make paper products, such as envelopes, letter paper and cardboard, you will see that there is an entire system in place to mass produce. It is said that, approx. 411 million metric tons of paper was produced in 2016. More than half of that production was attributable to packaging paper. And for that reason, there are entire systems in place to effectively reduce pollution that results from the paper making process. Therefore, socially responsible companies should invest and maintain their scrubber systems with high quality pads to ensure proper mist elimination. Mist Elimination is just as it sounds, elimination of mist. Mist is a common occurrence that impacts paper mills productivity across the globe. Mist elimination is a much-needed component in high pressure chemical washes. To make paper, wood pulp and other organic fibers will pass through a process that uses chemical and mechanical mechanisms to make the fiber into bleached...

As the population grows, so does the need for products and consumption, meaning the environmental impact is occurring at a rapid rate. Everything from water, to food to energy will be produced at facilities that are surely going to need to invest in expensive pollution control mechanisms. For example, it is very common to need to control the separation from liquid to vapor. Think about what your family consumes in a day. Many of our day to day products are made in factories that cause negative impacts on the environment. For example, all agricultures practices have been found to have a variety of astronomical effects on the environment, one being extreme air pollution. In the production of fertilizers which are used to grow the food that we eat is great cause of pollution. With all of this said, for companies that are in the business of producing of any product, investing in air pollution control equipment will be a top priority. The connection between emissions into the environment and the system from which they are emitted weighs heavily on production practices. An optimally functioning system means less down time, less pollution and less waste. A well-designed abatement system consists of a combination of scrubbers and mist eliminators. Certain compounds can be extremely corrosive to materials and even be considered toxic. It has been proven that exposure to chemicals can cause diverse reactions ranging from physiological to systemic effects. How does pollution abatement work? Mist eliminators or demisting is the removal...

We have learned to associate health hazards with the dreary smoke we see coming out of smokestacks as we pass by factory after factory. We often watch documentaries and movies about polluted towns and sick households with investigators on the hunt to identify and reduce emissions at their source. Due to these outcries in common cinema and sadly from some close to home stories, we realize that working in an industrial setting has a variety of hazards that come with the territory. What is the cost of not taking these matters seriously? For starters, workers can be injured by machines, chemicals, or other substances such as oil mist. There are numerous health impacts that these pollutants can have on people. These can include acne, allergic dermatitis, and contact dermatitis. When the substance gets into a person’s lungs, it can cause bronchitis, rhinitis, asthma, pneumonia, and potentially lung cancer. Health and safety are being taken very seriously by companies around the world. What is Oil Mist? The modern world consists of manufacturers of instruments, automotive, power train parts such as engines and transmission. It’s very likely that if you work or live near a manufacturing facility it will contain equipment such as machines for welding, grinding, cutting and milling. For industries that fry food, such as potato chips, the oils that are used in this process can evaporate and turn into droplets that float on the air. When plastic products are manufactured, a variety of different additives are used that can...

Combatting air pollution requires having the right equipment, internals and maintenance in place. The importance of these factors will the pivotal point in your system performance. Tower packing is a key component to your system. Designed for particulate removal and mist elimination, you will find that the best designed tower packing will make a difference in your operations. In unit operations or gas cleaning applications, mass transfer refers to the net movement of a chemical from one phase to another. Structured tower packing offers the ability for higher performance and efficiency at a lower pressure drop vs. random tower packing. Structured packing consists of large pieces of material that are placed individually in the tower at a specific orientation. The packing is specifically designed and manufactured to meet the requirements of each individual application. At Kimre, we offer woven interlaced tower packing, constructed of monofilament materials such as PVDF or Polypropylene. The structured materials can be layered in accordance to the application. They are then fit into cassettes which can be inserted at various stages of the vessel. If needed, the materials used will withstand high temperatures. Tower packing will effectively remove a wide range of air pollutants in many industrial applications. By allowing the liquid to flow down and over the surface of the packing, tower packing creates a mixing action between the gas and liquid. Tower Packing breaks up the liquid phase of the chemical process and creates the maximum surface area for transfer into the vapor phase,...

If you have a cooling tower on your facility to remove heat from your operations, you should be using a well fitted and properly designed drift eliminator. This will assure that you to keep toxic chemical compounds out of the surrounding environment while your production is at optimal level. Most cooling towers should be fitted with a drift eliminator as a way of protecting the natural environment, according to the Federal Energy Management Program as laid out by the U. S. Department of Energy. Strict regulations are enforced and must be complied with. Drift is a hazard to your facility During the cooling process, a cooling tower will release water vapor. Many facilities that process or use toxic chemicals in their operations run the risk of releasing the toxic particles into the air, via large water droplets. Over time this will cause considerable damage to the environment resulting in fines and a possible shutdown. The excess moisture being released from the vessel into the air will lead to corrosion problems throughout the facility, damaging the pipes, electrical components, and other equipment. This moisture can also cause the facility’s electrical systems to fail. All resulting in significant fines, cost, and product loss. To eliminate these issues, a drift eliminator is installed on the cooling tower. Its function is to capture the gas entrained droplets and force them to change direction by interfering with their velocity. This causes the water droplets to turn back the way they came, re-enter the cooling tower...

In every wet cooling tower, there is a loss of water emitted out of the tower and into the surrounding environment, this is known as cooling tower drift. This is due to the evaporative cooling process. Although this is a normal part of the cooling process, it is not always safe. The drift droplets that escape contain the same particulate matter of the circulating water that they originate from. Depending on the application and the cleanliness of the tower, this can include dangerous chemicals, bacteria’s and mold. To address the loss of waste heat and contaminated drift, drift eliminators must be implemented. Due to poor design and improper installations, many cooling towers are still at risk of hazardous carry over and unproductive downtime. It is important to choose the best drift eliminator manufacturer. To facilitate your cooling tower operations with a drift eliminator, you must choose the right manufacturer. Your drift eliminator should always be fabricated to your specifications. A custom designed drift eliminator should be able to accommodate any size cooling tower. Ideally, the flexible should allow for easy installation. If properly designed and installed, the droplets will collect, coalesce and drain the liquid away from the gas stream. Once installed, naturally the drift eliminator will sustain wear and become brittle or clogged over time. This process can happen prematurely if proper preventative maintenance is not scheduled and implemented. Labor and down time can be costly for removal and installation of a new cooling tower drift eliminator. Therefore, it...

Water, essential to live. Essential to cool your equipment. Essential to maintain your cooling tower in optimal working order. However, water in the form of drift can be costly, dangerous and deadly. Naturally cooling towers have a normal amount of evaporation. An abundance of evaporation can result in a major expense as well as the risk of exposing the surrounding environment to the release of toxic chemicals. If you have a cooling tower on your facility to remove heat from your operations, you should be using a high-quality drift eliminator. The Dangers of Drift Facilities that process or use toxic chemicals in their operations also run the risk of releasing drift. What is drift? Drift is the unwanted escape of toxins being released into the environment in via large water droplets that have escaped your cooling tower. These droplets can then contaminate the air around the facility or fall back to the ground and contaminate the ground or nearby water supply. They can then spread to other parts of the local environment, damaging ecosystems, wildlife, and residents alike. Drift can cause icing of public roads, parking lots, and fields downwind of the cooling tower. Drift can also negatively impact your facilities ability to produce. The excess moisture in the air can lead to corrosion problems throughout the facility, damaging the pipes, electrical components, and other expensive equipment. This moisture can also cause the facility’s electrical systems to fail. All this leading to costly repairs and possible shutdown. How Drift Eliminators...

The mist eliminator filter is a very important component that’s been seeing increasing use in many industrial processes. Its primary purpose is to filter gas streams, removing mist and heavy liquid particles from them. The benefits from it are twofold. First, the removal of mist from gas streams means less harm to the environment, as otherwise this mist, containing pollutants would be released into the atmosphere. The second benefit is protecting downstream equipment that may suffer from erosion caused by the contaminants in the mist. The factory or plant itself is also made free of this pollution, increasing the wellbeing of workers in it. Among the common applications of mist eliminator filters are: Chlorine or alkaline processes Acidic processes decontamination Abatement of organic fumes Heavy oil particle removal The additional bonus of this is not allowing too much water (which is often essential for equipment cooling) to leave the plant. The mist eliminator filter traps it and from there it cascades back down the shaft to the reservoir where it can be filtered and used again. This means not only a more eco-friendly but also considerably more efficient manufacturing operation. Our inline mist eliminator technology is comprised of tiny fibers that, with the help of Brownian motion, separate the heavier liquid particles (mist) from the gas stream as it passes by and through the filtration system. “A filtration system which eliminates oil mist from the exhaust air, thereby creating a cleaner and safer environment. ” Oil mist separators are an important component used for the extraction and filtration of oil mist. Typically, they are used for large-scale compressors, gas and steam turbines, as well as generators and other equipment with oil systems. Oil mist eliminators ensure clean, oil-free exhaust air. As particles are removed, what left behind is clean uncontaminated oil. An oil mist separator operates by using the coalescing effect inside a filtering unit. Oil-laden air is led into the filer by way of vacuum. A side channel vacuum pump creates the suction which can be adjusted manually via an additional air valve. The air flows through the inlet tube then onto the cavity, then through the filter house. Once here, the fine oil droplets join with larger droplets and are retained in the fibers. The oil droplets in the air stream are led through a series of microfiber cartridges which make up the oil mist separator. As the oil-laden air travels this “obstacle course”, the considerably heavier and larger oil particles get trapped and compressed. They are then separated from the main air stream. As they collect on the separator walls, they are pulled by gravity down the shaft and into a reservoir in the bottom of the filtering tunnel. Once collected, the oil is sent back to the lubricant oil tank to be reused. As a result of oil mist filter application, the...

Asphalt is a sticky, black, and highly viscous liquid or semi-solid form of petroleum. Hot asphalt is mixed at 300-350 degrees and needs to be laid hot, therefore it must be produced close to where it is being used. Asphalt plants can be set up on construction sites that need a steady supply of asphalt. This is convenient and allows for the readily supply hot asphalt. In turn for such a convenience, wet scrubber should be utilized to keep your asphalt plant in EPA compliance. Environmental protection laws have developed stringent codes in regard to the limit of water flow and particulate and smoke emissions from asphalt plants. Asphalt and Concrete is an extremely integral part of the infrastructure of modern life and its production is a growing sector of industrial production. Asphalt concrete is used in many different applications, most commonly in the construction of highways and roads. 90 percent of paved roads in the United States are paved with asphalt. The main components of asphalt concrete are sand, gravel, crushed stone, slag, rock dust, powder or asphalt binder. The production process of asphalt and concrete results in a lot of particulate matter, mainly in the form of dust. The dust produced by the process can disrupt the manufacturing process and cause premature equipment aging and failure. Dust and pollution control at asphalt concrete production facilities is essential to prevent dangerous conditions that are detrimental to worker’s health. To date, dry dust collectors are a common way of dust...

Mist eliminator pads and proper engineering go hand in hand when it comes to trapping airborne particles and maintaining an optimally functioning system. Particulate matter is the sum of all solid and liquid particles suspended in air, many of which are hazardous. Generally, these are divided into coarse and fine particles. Each has their own definition for measurement. They can be further classified as organic or inorganic in their origin. Some commonly would be known as dust, pollen, soot, smoke, and liquid droplets. They will vary in size and composition. Fine particles would be aerosols and vapors. Larger particles would be industrial dust from agricultural processes, uncovered soil, unpaved roads or mining operations. Everyday living such as traffic causes wear and tear on roads, producing particulate matter that we know as dust. Other common larger particulates are sea salt, pollen, mold and insect bodies. Federally, it is a requirement by EPA for industries that create pollution to eliminate or significantly reduce hazardous substances into the environment. At Kimre™, our experienced application specialist are advanced in designing mist eliminator pads and working with solvents that are used to further breakdown solutes or substance, also known as particulates. When properly engineered and installed, mist eliminator pads play a key role in the removal of entrained droplets or particles in the gas or vapor stream. Mist eliminator pads and filters are a cost-effective solution to reducing solvent losses and harmful emissions. This will extend equipment life and lessen maintenance cycles and down time....

For over 40 years, Kimre™ has been a respected leader in the design and implantation of wet scrubbers in plants around the globe. Generally, scrubbers are known for their function of “scrubbing” unwanted particles that find their way into the gas stream. Wet Scrubbers are found in chemical plants, acid manufacturing plants and steel making plants, amongst others. Wet scrubbers are utilized when a gas stream becomes contaminated by particulate or a gas, or a combination of both. Some gas pollutants could be ammonia, chlorine, or sulfur compounds. In the wet scrubber, these gasses will be dissolved or absorbed into the scrubbing liquid. The liquid many times is water, but can vary depending on the pollutant. In Industrial exhaust systems these harmful gasses or particulates must be removed to ensure optimal performance and compliance. Particulate matter is microscopic or liquid matter that finds its way into the gas stream. When the liquid comes into contact with the dust particulate, the heavier and coarser particles are washed out and carried down to make contact with the mist eliminator pads. Wet scrubbers are an effective pollution control device. To effectively work, many variables are considered when designing the scrubber. Particulate scrubbers, usually referred to as Venturi Scrubbers are typically effective in removing particulate from exhaust. These scrubbers are typically smaller and pose many advantages. Most commonly, a wet scrubber consists of a vessel, ductwork, fan, mist eliminator, pumps and the liquid treatment. Kimre’s™ experienced engineers can effectively design the optimal scrubber for...

The drift eliminator is an important component of most cooling towers used today in various industries where harmful droplets have the potential to be released into the environment. These droplets are composed of minerals, chemicals and water, which can impact not only the environment but your equipment. These harmful droplets are known as drift. Water loss from a cooling tower is inevitable, however making sure the water is harmless vapor is possible and essential. To address the loss of harmful droplets, a drift eliminator must be installed. However, a one-time installation is not the answer, there must be properly a designed product constructed of quality materials and maintenance to ensure proper functioning. Prior to explaining the components, we should elaborate on Kimre’s™ Driftor, Drift Eliminator. DRIFTOR® Drift Eliminator is an adaptation of the proven B-GON® Mist Eliminator, engineered to collect droplets and to drain collected liquid away from the gas stream using our coarsest diameter monofilaments. It is made of polypropylene material filled with carbon black for protection against ultraviolet deterioration by sunlight and enhanced service life. DRIFTOR® Eliminator can be used to reduce carryover from cross-flow and counter-flow cooling towers, evaporative condensers, coolers, quench towers, or any other tower where drift is a problem The Cooling Tower Mechanism: A profile of the drift eliminator: polypropylene material that prevents water loss from the cooling tower into the air. This is accomplished by an interrupting to the water by a directional change of airflow at different points in the cooling tower....

One of the most important factors in unit operations is distillation. The distillation and cooling processes occur by utilizing the internals. Internals, as important as they are to the operation, are not easily accessible. This is why it is imperative to choose the proper internals for the tower. Having the best option possible will allow for less down time and more production. Here is a list of differences between packed and tray towers as well as the advantages of choosing tower packing technology. Tray Tower Operation This type of tower creates liquid holdup to achieve optimal separation in the vapor-liquid mass transfer. The tower has stacks of horizontal trays and a weir on each tray creates the holdup. The liquid runs across the trays and then flows over to a downcomer to the next stage of separation. Trays used in those towers can be different, some of the models being valve trays, sieve trays and bubble cap trays. Packed Tower Design and Applications Tower packing creates a large amount of surface area per volume where the liquid-vapor mass transfer will occur. The vertical positioning of the surfaces allows for far more even flow during which the vapor and liquid remain in continuous contact with the packed bed surfaces. Unlike the step*based contact of the tray bed tower, this process is uninterrupted, improving flow and increasing the overall volume of processed vapor. Random Vs. Structured Tower Packing There are two primary models of packed bed towers, the random and structured tower...

Strick regulations regarding waste, health, safety and environmental issues are highly in effect. Many of these regulations pertain to air pollution. Air pollution can be caused by many things, from greenhouse gas emissions, to smoke particles, chemicals and oil amongst many others. This is one of the reasons why the important technology of oil mist separator has become very high demand. Oil pollutants can accumulate and be released in the air in many ways, this happens due to a number of factors from routine plant operations to faulty equipment. For example, metalworking operations rely on the use of coolants and lubricants to keep the machinery running smoothly. This use of oil for cooling involves heating elements to elevated temperatures, resulting in hydrocarbon smog, also known as “blue haze”. This smog will collect within the plant and gradually escape the building, seeping into the atmosphere. In food frying, oils will fume out into the air, producing a similar yet less harmful effect. In other manufacturing fields, polymers are infused with additives that grant them certain characteristics depending on the intended use. Those additives are often hard to keep contained. They will evaporate in the high-temperature plastic manufacturing process and find their way into the ventilation system and outside into the environment. Pollutants in all of these industries are of different calibers and present different degrees of danger to the environment, but all of them are harmful to some extent. Therefore, an oil mist extraction system is essential to keeping the facility...

Cooling towers are an essential part of power plants and other types of industrial facilities. A cooling tower is essentially a heat rejection device that emits the accumulated heat produced by the facility, which is also known as waste heat. This is achieved by channeling excess heat into a stream of water that absorbs it and then releases it out into the atmosphere. This can be done in several different ways. One is the evaporation of water, or by the presence of air that takes in the heat. The latter is the case in closed circuit cooling towers. In either case, loss of water is inevitable, because even in closed circuit systems, some evaporation will occur and water droplets will find their way out into the atmosphere. This loss of water is undesirable for two reasons - operational efficiency and drift control. Setting aside the question of efficiency caused by evaporation loss, let's focus on the problem presented by cooling tower drift. Which is by far the greater concern. Cooling tower drift is not by any means harmless water vapor. It is water that has become infused with chemicals and pollutants that can cause short and long-term damage to the environment and one’s health. The Solution - Drift Eliminators These water droplets carrying potentially hazardous materials are typically larger than the harmless pure vapor. Drift eliminators’ working principle is based on this difference and focuses on trapping and capturing those larger water droplets as they try to escape the cooling...

One of the main challenges faced by modern industry, whether it is fertilizer manufacturing, metal manufacturing, auto mechanics, chemical plants amongst various others is dealing with dangerous pollutants. This challenge has many factors, here we focus on two primary components: Efficient pollutant /contaminant removal Cost effective removal of contaminants The ideal solution for the liquid separation process for example, which is the topic of discussion here, would be a method that is both highly efficient, and extremely cost effective. Introducing Kimre’s LIQUI-NOMIX® Liquid Coalescers This patented technology is the “definition” of efficiency and cost effectiveness in the liquid separation process. It works by “polishing” streams of water to catch and remove liquid contaminants from them. The result is a below 2 PPM water quality, fit for absolutely any industry standard. Electrostatic Coalescer Transformer Technology The LIQUI-NOMIX® liquid separation process is used in many leading Original Equipment Manufacturers of oil/water separators, which is in itself a testament of its value and efficiency. It is an entirely new type of oil coalescer, or “separator”, in that it’s completely different than the traditional polyurethane foam coalescers. Those more typical separators absorb contaminants while mostly blocking the water’s flow. This obstruction puts a limit on how much water can be processed in any given amount of time. The coalescer technology we use has a unique filament structure that rather than stand in the way of the water flow, leads it in a tortuous path, along which it is cleansed. The walls of this path...

Kimre has recently achieved the lowest ever urea dust emissions using its SXF™ Semi-Cross Flow Scrubber technology at a urea granulation plant. The challenge for tougher emission control of urea dust was presented with the development of new urea production in the United States. With recent focus on the health impacts of fine airborne particulate, the permitted emission limit values negotiated between plant sites and local environmental authorities were lower than any previously demonstrated limits. Urea dust is characterized as “particulate matter”, one of six criteria air pollutants regulated by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) which established requirements for PM10 (particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter of 10 micrometers or less) and PM2. 5 (particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter of 2. 5 micrometers or less). PM10 and PM2. 5 have come under increased scrutiny due to recent studies showing detrimental health impacts of the penetration of these fine particles into the human lung. Requirements of less than 10 mg dust per Nm3 gas on a dry basis were desired for an industry that had previously required no less than 20 mg/Nm3 urea dust. Opacity regulations came along as new, separate enforceable emission requirements to particulate matter. With limits as low as zero percent, also known as “invisible stack” conditions, it is the most stringent air permit requirement in the industry. Ammonia, classified as a precursor to PM2. 5 which then becomes a regulated pollutant, is another source of emissions from urea granulation plants. It is not particularly difficult to deal...

Cooling towers are a specialized heat exchanger that allows water and air to come into contact with one another in efforts to lower the temperature of the hot water in an application. There are many aspects to cooling towers such as natural or mechanical, crossflow and counter flow, factory assembled or field erected. Overall, the purpose of a cooling tower is to take the water which has been heated by an industrial process and pump it through the pipes in the cooling tower. The water is then sprayed onto a material which allows exposure to cool air. This process cools the water. The cooled water then gets pumped back through the tower. The process is repeated to maintain a cooling effect on the equipment. Cooling towers produce evaporation also known drift. Drift is the loss of water droplets that are deposited in to the environment, these droplets have collected chemicals, oils and other particles that may present a real environmental hazard. To minimize drift and other mechanical issues, it is imperative to have a well-maintained cooling tower. The tower will function at maximum efficiency and produce less problems down the road. The Solution – A Drift Eliminator As evaporation occurs from the cooling tower, chemicals are released that can cause health hazards, environmental pollutants and lead to mechanical dysfunctions. When a DRIFTOR® drift eliminator is installed, those droplets of water are removed and the dangers they carry are minimized or avoided. The way this technology works is by setting obstacles...

Mist eliminators are one of the main safeguards not only in keeping the environment safe from contaminants, but also for maintaining a high productivity in plants around the world. Mist Elimination and pollution are vast and important topics, here we can only skim the surface. Before we go a little deeper into some the many benefits of mist elimination pads, let’s answer one important question: What is a Mist Eliminator? Mist elimination or “demisting” can be defined as the mechanical separation or removal of liquid droplets or mists from vapor streams. Failure to effectively capture these mists often leads to higher contaminant emissions, production loss, corrosion and increased maintenance costs. Mist elimination pads are used both in air intake and air exhaust points. They assist in keeping facilities and the environment safe by capturing contaminants that would otherwise create pollution and cause manufacturing issues. Accumulated mist can gradually cause damage to machinery. Mist elimination pads assist with keeping machinery operating optimally. The same mist, if not caught, can also inflict damage to a worker’s health and lead to litigation and worse. Kimre mist eliminators belong in three main categories: Fiber Bed Filter Mist Eliminators B-Gon Mist Eliminators® The Driftor® The Fiber Bed Filter, also known as a candle filter, is a high efficiency device which is used to trap soluble airborne mist particles. They are essentially cylindrical lined tubes that are used as beds where mist particles sink and get trapped. Their exact compound depends on the mist they are...
